What is Aspartame?

Aspartame is a low calorie sweetener consumed by millions of people daily in over 100 countries. Aspartame has been widely tested for over 20 years and is safe for general use according to the FDA, American Medical Association, American Dietetic Association and many other organizations. For more information on Aspartame safety, please go to www.aspartame.org.  See Phenylalanine information below.

What is Phenylalanine?
Aspartame is made up of two amino acids: phenylalanine and aspartic acid. Amino acids, which are sometimes referred to as the "building blocks of protein", are found in many protein containing foods including milk, grains, meat and certain vegetables. Phenylketonuria, or PKU, is a rare hereditary disorder that affects about 1 in 15,000 Americans. People with PKU do not have enough of the enzyme to break down phenylalanine and must limit their intake of foods with this amino acid which include meats, dairy products and foods containing aspartame. For comparative purposes, a 4 ounce hamburger has more than 10 times the amount of phenylalanine contained in a bottle of AQUACAL.

In the US, all newborns are tested for PKU and advised restricted diets. Labels for all products containing aspartame must disclose phenylalanine as an ingredient so persons with PKU are informed. Healthy individuals without PKU do not need to limit their intake of phenylalanine.

How can I get a replacement for AQUACAL made with prior formula?
Although the FDA and other food safety authorities have reiterated that there is no known health risk to consumers from the benzene levels found in certain soft drinks, Meridian reformulated its AquaCal products in March 2006 to eliminate the addition of ascorbic acid (vitamin c) which, when combined with other ingredients can, under certain limited circumstances, cause the formation of benzene.

If you purchased an AquaCal Strawberry, Grape and Peach Flavored Water product between February 2005 and March 2006, you may be entitled to receive a replacement by completing the following form:
